Agkistri, also known as Angistri or Agistri, is a small island located in the Saronic Gulf in Greece, near the larger island of Aegina. Although it is a small island, Agkistri boasts a rich history, beautiful beaches, delicious traditional cuisine, and unique local festivals.

  1. History:
Agkistri has been inhabited since the ancient times, and it has a history closely linked with that of the larger, neighboring island of Aegina. Its name, which means “little hook” in Greek, is believed to have come from its shape. The island was known in antiquity for its dense pine forests, which were mentioned by famous ancient Greek authors. The island has several archaeological sites, though they are less extensively explored than those of larger islands.
At Metochi, you will find the remains of a prehistoric settlement dating back to 2500 BC. These ruins give a glimpse into the island’s ancient history. Additionally, the church of Agioi Anargyroi has a history dating back to the Byzantine era, and is a significant religious site on the island.
  2. Local Beaches:
The island has several stunning beaches, each with its own unique charm. The island’s most famous beach is Skala, located near the main port. With its fine sand and crystal-clear water, it is a beloved spot for both locals and tourists. Additionally, Dragonera Beach, with its lush green backdrop, provides a more secluded, peaceful experience. Another unique beach is Chalkiada, a pebble beach enclosed by steep cliffs, which is only accessible by foot or boat.
  3. Traditional Cuisine:
Agkistri’s cuisine is based on traditional Greek food with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Seafood is a staple in their diet, given the island’s location. You can find dishes like octopus in vinegar, stuffed squid, and grilled sardines. A local delicacy is the “bourbouli”, a type of small fish that is usually fried. The island is also known for its locally produced honey, wine, and olives. Many of the tavernas will serve local dishes using these ingredients, and it’s a great opportunity to experience the island’s culinary culture.
  4. Local Festivals:
Agkistri has a number of local festivals that celebrate the island’s culture and history. One of the most significant is the Feast of Agioi Anargyroi, which takes place on July 1st each year. This religious festival is dedicated to the patron saints of the island, and it includes a procession, traditional music, dancing, and feasting. Another notable event is the “Fisherman’s Night” in August, a celebration of the island’s fishing heritage with seafood feasts, music, and dancing.

It’s important to note that while Agkistri is small, its close-knit community, rich history, and stunning natural beauty make it a unique destination within the Saronic Gulf.
